Please read 1Kings the 19th Chapter
And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? (I Kings 19:10-13)
Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation. (Psalms 62:1)
This is a time and most of us live in places where there is a lot of noise. For some the noise could stretch 24hrs a day is some measure. It occurs so much that it’s possible to develop an of immunity to it. That’s the physical noise, the loud mufflers on cars and trucks, the thumping base of rap music, the noise of construction and things of that nature. There are small noises that are so faint and go unnoticed by the outward conscience. We don’t notice the higher frequencies on all of the electronic equipment around us that is becoming increasingly incessant, non stop and without interruption. Animals can hear much higher frequencies than humans can, most of it for us it’s all noise and noise is interference. It is a disruption to quietness and sometimes peace. There are other types of noise most notable the noise of politics prejudice idolatry and pride. The noise of lies and deceit, the noise of threats and persecution. The noise of the loudest who thinks that will prove they are the powerful. There is the noise of the constant pull of sin against man to destroy his soul. Elijah the Prophet experienced the noise coming from Jezebel and he knew he needed a respite from the noise.
In the text above, Psalm 62:1, Kind David, a man who had experience many trials and tribulations knew how to get relief from the troubles and the cares of life. Life can become very noisy at times. David proclaimed “truly my soul waiteth” upon YHWH”. In the Hebrew tongue this wait is a stillness, silent quietness denoting to stop. I will not move until I hear from heaven. I will cease from striving. What you need comes from YHWH. In the midst of the noise, the peace that you need comes from the Lord, only he has the answer to the problem. There are some situations, when you serve him, that only YHWH can fix. The strength that you need comes from the Lord. Elijah went to a quiet place because he trusted YHWH. The messenger of the Lordwoke him, fed him and told him that he needed strength for his journey. When Israel was closed in, the powerful sound of the waves crashing, breakers dashing of the Red sea against the walls of the wilderness on one side and the crushing boisterousness and vitriol madness of the chariots of Pharaoh’s army piercing their hearts with freight, the Lord rose up in Moshe in the strength of his meekness comforted their hearts and minds by exclaiming “stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. When the storms of life are crashing against you, it’s not time to panic and be fearful, it is a time to courageously “be still”. You may think you are at the end of your line and cannot see what’s in front of you like Elijah but peace and victory is in trusting the Word.
King David gives us many keys and instruction on being still. The major key is prayer. When you have a consistent constant fervent sincere pray life, YHWH will fill you with the strength, the courage, the answers, the victory and everything you do shall prosper. “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. (Psalms 1:3)”. Prayer is not always full of so many words, pray in the Spirit, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (Romans 8:26)”. Be still, the Comforter is already here to help you. You are not without help. Yeshua who sits on the right hand of the Father is your advocate in Heaven above. You are setup for victory and not failure. Bridle the tongue by speaking the truth of YHWH and not the noise of the world and defeat. Yeshua instilled peace in you when you are filled with the Holy Spirit. You are instilled with faith hope and love in the Holy Spiritbut if you don’t listen, you can’t hear it. Be silent before the Lord and you will hear him. Too many people want it their way like Naaman of Syria 2 Kings 5. The prophet told him what he needed to do to be healed of his leprosy but he didn’t listen immediately. He offered other solutions but upon some convincing, he yielded to the truth and was healed.
Elijah heard from the Lord while he was in the cave. Even at that moment it is wisdom to listen carefully. He was told to “go out and stand on the mountain”. In his obedience he was not distracted by the sound of the wind, the shaking of the earthquake or the vehemency of the fire, he stood still and heard the word of the Lord.
